1 File In/With: N/A Supersedes SI0198 (1209) SI0198 REV 616 Service Information Equipment Affected: Small Tonnage Commercial Chiller Products DX Evaporator Gasket Replacement Procedure General: The following outlines the recommended procedure for Chiller DX Evaporator Gasket replacement. It is highly recommended that any replacement gasket be furnished per the part number in the Replacement Parts Form (Reference YORK Product Service Library). This gasket number provides the exact replacement material, thickness and design as furnished by the original equipment manufacturer along with any updates to the gasket. Failure to use the proper replacement gasket could void any existing warranty coverage. Chiller Evaporator Cooler Gasket Replacement Procedure: 1. Familiarize yourself with all of these instructions prior to proceeding. 2. Verify all refrigerant has been removed from the Cooler (Draining of the Cooler is not required). 3. Carefully remove insulation from the head bolt area to facilitate bolt and head removal, making sure to mark insulation for replacement. 4. Cut/un-sweat refrigerant lines from refrigerant head (if required). 5. Carefully remove all bolts from head being careful head does not slip out or damage bolting studs. Remove Heads. Heads are very heavy and require extreme care when being handled. Use supporting straps, slings, etc. as needed. 6. Clean off old gasket material from head, tube sheet and baffle ring (If installed). a. Peel and scrape off old gasket and adhesive (Use care NOT to gouge or mar the head surface). b. Utilize a hand scraper to remove old gasketing/adhesive. Clean all "gasket" surfaces (tube sheet, both baffle ring surfaces and head) with acetone or equivalent solvent using clean rags. c. Final surface should appear shiny and allowed to dry. 7. Verify the replacement gasket is correct. Work on this equipment should only be done by properly trained personnel who are qualified to work on this type of equipment. Failure to comply with this requirement could expose the worker, the equipment and the building and its inhabitants to the risk of injury or property damage. The instructions on this service bulletin are written assuming the individual who will perform this work is a fully trained HVAC & R journeyman or equivalent, certified in refrigerant handling and recovery techniques, and knowledgeable with regard to electrical lock out/tag out procedures. The individual performing this work should be aware of and comply with all Johnson Controls, national, state and local safety and environmental regulations while carrying out this work. Before attempting to work on any equipment, the individual should be thoroughly familiar with the equipment by reading and understanding the associated service literature applicable to the equipment. If you do not have this literature, you may obtain it by contacting a Johnson Controls Service Office. Should there be any question concerning any aspect of the tasks outlined in this bulletin, please consult a Johnson Controls Service Office prior to attempting the work. 2 8. Apply Adhesive a. When possible, provide an adhesive curing environment that is as close to 70 F as possible. A normal 70 F semi-curing time minimum is 2 hours with a full curing time in 24 hours. Lower temperatures will require longer curing times. Never apply adhesive below 40 F. Only apply adhesive to one side of the head (and baffle ring if installed) mating surface. When tacky, set gasket in place. Adhesive is only used to hold the gasket in place during assembly. Most refrigerants will disolve the adhesive. Note: Any excess adhesive will only increase the amount of "set" the gasket will take. The adhesive is NOT used for sealing leaks. b. Apply a thin ( ) uniform coat of 3M Scotch Grip #1357 adhesive (Loctite #380 may be substituted but requires a longer curing time) to the head surface only and allow to tack prior to mating gasket. Repeat for baffle ring gasket (If installed). "Bulb and Channel" and Flat Gaskets are NOT interchangeable. c. After surfaces are tacky, carefully place gasket on head to assure proper alignment (I.e. Gasket is centered on the head partition) and gasket fits flush to surface (No air pockets). d. Check gaskets to assure they adhere before installing head and associated parts. Allow proper semicuring time (See a above) before re-installing head with Gasket. e. Prior to re-installing, cut any unused dividers from the gasket following semi-curing, being careful not to miss-align gasket. 9. Carefully guide head/gasket and baffle ring/gasket (if applicable) back into place on the Cooler, making certain that the gasket is not disturbed. Install "new" Belleville Washers and Snug head bolts so that head does not move once in place. Belleville washers are used to displace gasket "set". Belleville Washers are required Verify you have the required quantity of "new" Belleville Washers available and correctly in place, prior to installing nuts. Use (2) washers per stud, stacked in series as follows. Where evaporator studs will NOT accomodate Bellevelle washers, or Belleville washers are NOT included, it will be necessary to re-check the torque values after 2 weeks and again at 4 weeks as a minimum. If the torque values did NOT change through the 1 month review, revisit the review monthly up to 3 months. NOTE: Concave sides of washers face the other washer. 3 10. Torque Bolts diametrically by quadrants (Criss-Cross). Special Note: When center bolts are part of the torque scheme, always start with the center bolts from center diametrically outward (Note that Ft Lbs may vary from perimeter), then the perimeter bolts diametrically by quadrants similar to the following (Number of bolts may vary). Repeat this in the various "numbered steps" indicated in step 11. Note also that the center torque schemes may end with two repeat steps where center step number are greater than the perimeter step numbers BOLTS 3 12 BOLTS Evaporator Head Torque Information is shown in the table below Do NOT tighten bolts beyond the final step value (always review torque again after 24 hours but do not exceed maximum value). Re-torque to above specs after 24 hours, prior to evacuating, charging, and running system(s). 13. Evacuate all circuits to 500 Microns. Recharge (1) circuit and verify the vacuum holds on the other circuit(s). Repeat for other system(s) and final charge. 14. Chiller is now ready to run. 15.
